Depending on the judge in your area. A similar thing happened to me, and I kept the dog (still have him 6 yrs later). I recorded everything, and when the guy finally wanted Gary back, I said no way...I did say he could have him if he paid me back for all the bills (which I knew he could not afford). Well the dude took me to court, I was honest and had all the paper work...the judge granted me custody. The guy had to pay all of the court fees by the way. That was in Derry, Pa., a small town. Good luck.

I'd go for the German Shepard or Doberman or Alsatian... They seem to be the best watch dogs you can get! To be honest I haven't heard of the 'Brown Bear' but nothing would surprise me these days! :-)

If you want to get bitten/attacked because you were so stupid - all the above options are great.

I'm sorry I have no advice but it sounds like you already have some good advice. I just wanted to offer an opinion. Do Not give up the dog. Do whatever you have to from offering to buy it for a small amount (like $20) all the way to contacting a lawyer. This is your dog now. If they were SO concerned about it before, they should have picked it up before when they said they would. I'm also guessing that they never contacted you as to why they didn't pick up the dog or to reschedule. By not doing so, they have abandoned the dog and should have no legal rights to the dog. Good luck to you and YOUR dog!

lol, black bears have the benefit of sneaking up on people in the dark. I prefer polar bears and i cover them in red ink and chain them to my front door that scares people away. but i live in Antarctica, if brown bears are easier to get, i support your decision although salmon is rather pricey

You should definately consider donating it to either your local Humane Society / SPCA OR research the animal rescue organizations in your area and donate the food to them. All of the above are non-profit agencies and rely heavily on donations, and they would all be very grateful for your food donation.

**edited to add**

Just saw your update. Is there any way you can contact the agency that you won the food from and tell them to transfer your "WIN" to that animal shelter?

Also, like I said previously, do a search for rescue groups in your area too.

I am sure the laws are state specific, I would check out your local abandonment laws. My guess is she doesn't have a leg to stand on. See attached for Florida:
Under common law, title to abandoned property, or property that is intentionally and voluntarily relinquished by the owner, goes to the next person who possesses the property. This rule of law is often statutorily granted to animal shelters; laws may explicitly state that when companion animals who are voluntarily "abandoned" to animal shelters, title automatically passes. However, abandonment of companion animals in unsuitable or illegal situations, such as on a roadside or at a veterinarian's office, may carry with it other legal ramifications. In fact, under most cruelty laws it is violation to intentionally abandon a companion animal.

Yah know I saw a serious article on burglary that actually recommended a Chihuahua - the point being the biggest need is a dog that'll BARK at a stranger but not run its mouth all day
AS for the bear, there is the tiny little law about keeping captive wildlife without a zoo permit .. not to mention I would have to check if they are on the endangered species act.. But since you're trolling I won't bother
