Leashes
Every dog needs to be trained to a leash for his own well being. Naturally you will use a leash for going on walks with your dog, but you will also use it to teach your dog right from wrong. A good leash and lead are essential accessories for you and your dog.
As a dog owner, you have an essentially limitless choice of leashes and leads to choose from. It may seem a bit overwhelming, and the choice of which leash or lead to get might seem more difficult than actually training the dog, but do worry, I'm going to break it down for you. With a little knowledge, you'll be able to find the right choice for you and your dog.
Every day, something "new" comes out on the market but there is really no need to look at all of them in detail. Stick with the tried and true basics at first; you'll know when you need something special or maybe just more fun.
Retractable Leashes
These are leashes that have a cord on a spring powered reel that allows you to control the amount of leash you're giving to the dog. You can keep it short to keep the dog close, or let it out to let him roam a bit on his own.
Slip Leads
These simple leads are a length of rope or braided leather with a loop at each end. Popular among professional trainers and handlers, these are the types of leads you see used at dog shows.
Nylon Leashes
Nylon web leashes are cheap and colorful and popular, but they can also easily cause chafing and fur damage if you're not careful.
Leather Leashes
Leather leashes, either straps or braided, are long time favorites for good reason. They are comfortable on the dog and will last a very long time if cared for with an occasional rub with leather oil. Leather leashes are good for training as well as general use.
We all have our reasons for selecting one leash over another, but my clear favorite is a simple rope lead. It is what I use for training and my dog knows that when the leash goes on, it's time to get down to business.
However, many family dogs are less highly trained and a retractable leash may be the best choice for your situation.
