Good oral health is just as important for your dog as it is for you. The mouth can be a pathway for disease so it is important to take the steps necessary for good oral health.
In the same way it causes problems for humans, it is the accumulation of plaque (also called tartar) that causes gum disease. It is actually the bacteria in dental plaque that secret acids that kill gum tissue and attack tooth enamel. If left untreated, this condition can progress to an infection of the jaw bone.
Symptoms of gum disease include bad breath and irritated and bleeding gums. You will notice if you dog has oral pain if it refuses chew toys or drops food from its mouth and stops eating.
Just like with people, proper oral care begins at an early age. By finding and treating dental problems early, you can avoid more serious problems down the road.
Most dog professionals these days feed their dogs a combination of wet and dry foods. The crunchy texture of the dry food helps remove plaque and stimulates blood circulation in the gums helping to avoid disease.
Always ask you vet to check your dog's teeth during every exam, and ask him if you need to be providing additional dental care. Some dogs will naturally require more care than others depending on breed and other factors.
You will find no shortage of products on the market to help you maintain your dog's dental health. There are specially formulated biscuits, bones, chew treats, as well as toothpaste and tooth brushes. Using a variety of these items will help insure your dog has a healthy mouth and teeth.
Be sure to use an all natural toothpaste for dogs as some human toothpastes include detergents that are not safe for pets to swallow. Fluoride toothpastes should also be avoided.
You can brush your dog's teeth with a regular brush or a finger brush, depending on the size of your dog's mouth and which type works best for you and him. Most vets recommend weekly or twice weekly brushing for optimum results.
Many dogs come to love having their teeth brushed and all the attention that comes with it, so don't be afraid to start regular dental care of your dog if you're not doing it now!
