Dog crates are made from plastic or wire mesh material and are a place for your dog to sleep in or be in when necessary. The crate gives your dog his own secure place which he can use as a retreat from the hectic pace of today's family homes.
Crate training is a very effective, non-violent way to teach your dog right from wrong and will help him learn the rules of house-training and where to sleep and how to insure that you won't have destructive behavior when you are away. It is important to remember that dogs are "den" animals by nature and by having his own crate, you're providing a surrogate den which helps your dog feel safe and secure and relieves stress.
The most important in choosing a crate is size. Be prepared to go through a couple of sizes as your puppy grows. Crates need to be large enough for your dog to stretch out completely and feel comfortable, but not so large that you have elimination problems.
The crate should have room for a water dish and should include a generous washable blanket and should be kept in a place where the dog can look out and see the family action. Feeling close to his "pack" will help your dog relieve stress.
If you are going to be out for a few hours, you can put your pet in his crate and she should settle down and sleep for most of the time you are gone. Crate training ensures that you don't have any bad behavior while you're gone. Never leave your dog in a crate for longer than four hours and be sure to allow them time for elimination on a regular basis.
Dogs have a natural instinct to not soil the place where they sleep, so by training your dog to sleep in his crate, you insure than he will keep his sleeping place clean and will wait until you take him to the correct place for doing his business. Be sure to reward him for his good behavior and he will soon learn where to go to relieve himself.
Always praise your dog for using his crate as he should and remind all family members that the crate is the dog's private space and he should not be bothered in any way when he is in his crate. Proper crate training results in a dog that feels confident in knowing his place in the pack and everyone is happier.
